Dunning Golf Club's Easter Bunny Update

What a difference a week makes....

There we were on Opening Day, basking in those warm March temperatures. Some of us even had the audacity to complain about sunburn on our unprotected heads! Well, a week may be a long time in politics, but in Dunning weather circles it’s almost a season. 58 golfers lined up on March 28th with hopes of early season glory. By 4pm that afternoon, those hopes had "Gone With The Wind", blown way off course by a near gale force wind that picked up at about 10am and was pretty unrelenting thereafter. We had trolley bags being blown into bunkers and ponds. We had very bulky golfers (including myself) being blown off their feet. And we now have a field over the wall and road on the first hole that is now home for approximately 40 golf balls. The final damage was 15 scores over 100, 17 No Returns and only 4 sub 70 scores. Congratulations to Terry Mackie who fought his way through the carnage to win the Medal prize.

It's Grumpy Match Secretary Time

“AS IN PREVIOUS YEARS, THERE IS A MANDATORY ENTRY FEE OF £1 FOR EVERY MONTHLY MEDAL (MARCH, APRIL, MAY, JUNE, AUGUST, SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER). PLEASE PLACE YOUR FEE WITH YOUR SWEEP / MAGIC TWO’S STAKE IN AN ENVELOPE IN THE BOX.”

The above words formed the key part of an information poster, three copies of which were strategically positioned in the Pavilion in places where they could (in theory) not be ignored. It was also in an e mail sent out on 21st March, a copy of which was posted on the web site. Nevertheless, five golfers decided to overlook its obvious meaning and failed to pay the requisite fee. With it being Easter and all that, I’ve gone all soft and fluffy (like an Easter Bunny) and held back on cancelling their cards. The situation has been resolved and I have communicated with those involved (and recovered the £5!). There is another Monthly Medal (April) this weekend so please ensure you pay your dues. However, there will be no more Easter Bunny sympathy from now on. Please be assured that those who fail to pay will be removed from future Monthly Medal competitions. There are no excuses.

Frozen

The Ladies' competitive season kicked off on Tuesday but was less like "Gone With The Wind" and more like "Frozen" as a combination of hail, sleet and snow swept across Rollo Park. It's not often the Greenkeeping staff have to herd reindeer off the course, but such was the case earlier in the week. Nevertheless, Ellen Lawrence produced some hot golf in freezing conditions to win the day. Congratulations Ellen.

US Masters Mixed Texas Scramble on 8th April

To date we have 25 of the 36 places taken for next Wednesday’s competition. You can sign up now via the booking system. If Wednesday's not your normal day and you need a reason to play, please select one of the following:

  • Texas Scramble is an unbelievably sociable and enjoyable form of competitive golf. (Even if you don't have a handicap, we'll find a slot for you)
  • Many of you will be having an Easter break from work and will need an excuse not to be decorating or gardening.
  • Most of you will undoubtedly need some exercise to run off all those Cadbury Crème Eggs.
  • You may have the opportunity to play in the same team as Captain Hugh (note that this is the last option)

Meet time is 9am for the draw and a 9.30am shotgun start. You don’t need a partner or a team, it will all be organized for you.

And don’t forget the Tee Room…..

It’s open for business 7 days a week and has made an excellent start receiving great support from DGC members, locals and tourists.  A great place to sit and reflect on that super round you’ve just had…. or (more usually) forget that dreadful one!

Have a Happy Golfing Easter
